Our Story

2012 was the year I decided to take exercise seriously. I remember meeting my first PT — Snape (yes, that's his name) at the gym in Clapham. I was the only black woman on the gym floor. At 5"10, I felt I stuck out. I wondered if I was going to be able to open up about my body insecurities to this giant, rugby player-turned-PT. There were no female PT's of colour at this gym.

I remembered this discomfort again when I gained my ACSM PT qualification in 2016 and I was, again, the only black woman in my cohort. I still feel invisible when I scroll through Instagram or read a health magazine and see no one who looks like me. The implicit message there is black women don't exist in fitness. We do. We're just not represented.

As a PT and woman in tech, I'm accustomed to being the only black face in a white space. I created agbara because I'm passionate about fitness and supporting women. I believe the Internet can be a force for good — to change society for the better.

Quite simply, the fitness industry has a diversity problem. Together, we can change the status quo.

agbara means 'strength' in Yoruba. To me, I see strength in numbers, strength in blackness, and strength in women supporting women. I hope you'll join us!

We're launching soon 💪🏾
